AIA
America Invents Act (AIA) is a US federal statute that switched the U.S. patent system from a first-to-invent to a first-to-file system. The statute was signed by President Barack Obama on September 16, 2011 and fully came into effect on March 16, 2013. Canada, the Philippines, and the United States were the last countries world-wide to adopt a first-to-file system and switched to this system in 1989, 1998 and 2013.
