Therapeutic misconception
Therapeutic misconception was originally described in 1982 by Paul Appelbaum and colleagues and was introduced to the bioethics community in 1987. Therapeutic misconception occurs when a research subject does not understand that the main purpose of a clinical trial is to produce generalizable knowledge and has an unrealistic idea of the therapeutic benefit he or she can expect from participating the trial.
